Our Purpose
The Public Domain Literature Library is an independent catalogue of ebooks and reading companions drawn from early modern English literature and related works. Our aim is to make out-of-copyright texts more accessible to readers who wish to explore stories, ideas and historical perspectives without commercial or algorithmic filters.
How to Use This Catalogue
You can browse the catalogue by category or search for a specific title. Each book is accompanied by contextual notes, reading guides or edition insights where available. These are not academic critiques but practical signposts: they may highlight themes, historical background, or points of interest that enrich a reader’s experience. The catalogue is designed for general readers, students, educators and anyone curious about older works.
Organisation of Books
Books are grouped into categories that reflect broad themes or settings. Current categories include:
- Wandering Heroes Classic Adventures – stories centred on youth, education and personal development.
- Fantasy Juvenile Worlds – narratives set against conflict and national change.
- Science Fiction Utopias – works that provide background to historical events or cultural shifts.
- Historical Psychological Social Fiction – explorations of social norms, customs and transformation.
Within each category you will find individual catalogue entries. Some titles appear in multiple editions or with different companion materials. For example, The Ladies' Paradise is available both as A Reader’s Guide and as Context and Discussion, each offering a distinct entry point into the same novel. Other works, such as Captain Salt in Oz or The Bears of Blue River, are presented with companion essays that explore their themes and historical setting. This variety allows you to choose the level of context that suits your reading.
Metadata Review
Each entry includes basic bibliographic information: author, title, original publication date where known, and a note on the source text. File Presentation
Ebooks are offered in standard formats such as EPUB and PDF. Where possible, we have cleaned the text of obvious scanning errors and applied consistent formatting. Contextual Reading Notes
Many entries include a companion essay or reading notes.
