Purpose of the catalogue
The UGEMU Public Domain Literature Library provides free access to a curated selection of public-domain works. The catalogue aims to help readers discover and understand books through editorial notes, contextual information, and meaningful categorisation.
Scope and selection
All books in the catalogue are in the public domain, sourced from Project Gutenberg. The selection Catalogue maintenance uses source records and bibliographic context. The current collection comprises 97 titles, chosen for their literary interest, historical relevance, and readability.
Source attribution
Every book record credits the original digital source (Project Gutenberg) and includes author names, illustrator credits, translator information, and publication details as supplied by the source. No modifications are made to the bibliographic metadata.
Bibliographic records
Each entry includes the book title, author(s), publisher, keywords, target reader note, and a supplementary catalogue note. The catalogue note offers observations on themes, structure, and narrative voice based on excerpts, without claiming a full reading of the entire work.
Category assignment
Books are grouped into four categories according to their predominant themes and settings. Category boundaries are approximate; some works may fit multiple categories. The assignments are meant as navigation aids, not definitive literary judgements. Categories are reviewed periodically and may be adjusted as the collection grows.
Editorial reading context
Catalogue notes are based on sample excerpts, prefaces, and bibliographic data. They are intended to provide a starting point for readers, not a comprehensive analysis. the catalogue project does not claim to have read every book in full. Observations focus on recurring motifs, narrative techniques, and structural patterns evident in the available material.
Edition facts and Where source text can be measured reliably, word count and estimated reading time may be provided as reading-scope information. All books are in English unless otherwise noted in the record.
Recommendations and related works
The catalogue includes reading paths and recommended books within category pages. These suggestions are based on thematic similarities and are not endorsements of quality. Readers are encouraged to explore based on their own interests.
